Notes on the (2012) election

I am writing this Election Day afternoon.  Whatever happens in the next few hours, the challenge beginning now is the same.  Democrats and progressives cannot just seek votes one election season at a time.  We need to define a vision for America’s future that will resonate with many voters while being true to our beliefs: a country where everyone sacrifices for the common good; where taxes and benefits are structured to provide essential services and to invest in all our children; and where political power is shared equally.  We need to make the point that America still has a bright future, but only if we all work for it.

The President should be making this case, and he still can, but whether or not he does is irrelevant to our obligation.

If anyone knows people who are now beginning to plan for a strong progressive message, I’d love to be in touch.
